Sakina P. Spruell
Business Journalist
The creator and host of Keeping It Rich™, Sakina Spruell is the founder of Cole Media Inc and has been a business journalist for more than a decade. She writes, edits and contributes to many Time Inc. publications to include Money, Fortune Small Business and Essence. In addition, she was a producer on The Suze Orman Show at CNBC, and a long-time editor at Black Enterprise magazine where she still serves as a personal-finance freelance writer and presenter of the Black Enterprise Wealth for Life seminar. She has presented this seminar as well as the “Keeping It Rich” seminar to multi-cultural professional organizations and college groups. Most recently, Sakina launched the Keeping It Rich Club, an online community for wealth builders.
Sakina has close to 15 years of journalism experience and has specialized in business for most of her career. She began her career in broadcast and was previously an on-air reporter for CNN Headline News and a writer/producer for CNNfn.
She completed the Knight Bagehot fellowship in economics and business and received a Master’s of Science from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She is a graduate of Rutgers University New Brunswick, where she studied Communications and African-American Studies. She is a previous co-chair of the Business Writers Task Force for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). She received the Griot Award for Excellence from the New York chapter of NABJ (NYABJ) in 2000. In 2006, Sakina received an NYABJ award for Best Business Story, which recognized Sakina’s feature on the two largest black-owned banks in the nation.
